Discussion: Strategies for Academic Portfolios

In the realm of marketing, a successful branding strategy is one of the most important contributors to organizational success. A solid branding strategy can help add visibility and credibility to a company’s products.

Similarly, nurse-scholars can build a personal brand to add visibility and credibility to their work. You can begin building your brand by developing and maintaining an academic portfolio. Such an activity can help share the results of your efforts and contribute to your success. This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider and share strategies for building your portfolio.

To Prepare:

  • Reflect on strategies that you can pursue in developing portfolios or portfolio elements that focus on academic achievements.
  • Review one or more samples from your own research of resources focused on portfolio development.

By Day 3 of Week 8

Post an explanation of at least two strategies for including academic activities and accomplishments into your professional development goals. Then, explain how those goals may align with the University’s emphasis on social change. Be specific and provide examples.

By Day 6 of Week 8

Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by offering additional ideas regarding academic achievements to include or offering alternative ways of presenting the current achievements.

Strategies for Academic Portfolios

The days of resumes and cover letters are changing.  I’m sure my colleagues have also heard about how “oversatured the market is for Nurse Practitioners”.  With a growing number of Nurses graduating each year, there is more pressure to make ourselves standout from other applicants. A well-constructed E-Portfolio can mean the difference between a potential employer choosing you and another equally qualified applicant.  Soon, keeping your resume updated won’t be enough to land your dream job (Hannans & Olivo, 2017).

I plan to utilize coursework and reflections from each course into my professional development goals.  I think it’s going to be important not only to keep up with completed work, but to reflect on each course.  This will also give my prospective employers insight on my academic growth.  As a part of my undergraduate degree completion, I had to complete an academic portfolio for the RN-BSN program.  My portfolio included research papers, group projects, certifications and training, and my resume.

Walden’s definition of social change is the deliberate process of creating and applying ideas…to promote the development of individuals communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies (Walden, n.d.). For example, in my undergraduate evidence-based practice course, my topic was sepsis.  Working in the ICU, I’m more familiar with the signs of sepsis, but they often got missed on med -surg floors.  I was able to utilize my research for school, to implement a Sepsis Protocol at my current hospital that is being implemented throughout the hospital.

Another strategy that I plan utilize is documenting my clinical experiences, clinical sites, and clinical preceptors during school to promote myself as an individual and a practitioner.  As stated by Burns (2008) “the nurse can use a portfolio to document competencies and achievements during evaluations, and for applications regarding promotions or awards” (p.16). As a new graduate, this will be one of the only indications that my future employers have about things such as my work ethic, professionalism, competencies, and skills. I will continue to update my portfolio throughout the program and accumulate meaningful material to incorporate into my portfolio.  Portfolios have the potential to be a tool that is an accessible resource that can assist in supporting career changes, meet professional body requirements, attest to academic ability and ultimately help to individual practitioners (Casey & Egan, 2010).
